Her full results are available here, but as a quick summary she found that the majority (about 55%) of the arena's daily landfill-bound trash was actually compostable. Another 20% was recyclable, meaning only about 25% of the materials placed in trash bins actually belonged in those bins. Importantly, bins for both compost and recycling are available in Alaska Airlines Arena, so this result simply reflect folks who aren't making use of available bins for one reason or another. Overall, game attendees would have sent over 200 pounds of stuff to the landfill, but only about 50 pounds of this stuff actually belonged in a landfill.
A few UWGP folks were in attendance at the event, and we'd like to thank all who helped, and most especially Laura Lee for taking the initiative to carry out this event and for inviting us. Her data and insights are helpful in that they add to our growing sample of campus waste (and extend this sample into a portion of campus with vendor and waste management systems which are distinct from the areas previously examined), and we were very pleased to meet new folks who are also engaged in waste issues on campus.
